An Interview with Terry Amos from Amos Air

Terry’s situation

How long had you been in business for?

Amos Air had been in business for approximately 13 years prior to a chance meeting with a friend who wholeheartedly recommended Matt.

All the difficulties and challenges that I guess most business owners meet along the way. Nothing bad as such, but enough stressors that makes you want to slink under your desk for a time and disappear. Employee issues, whether it be sick leave adding up, workplace injuries, customer complaints, etc - the feeling like you are doing it on your own and wondering if it is all worth it.

What challenges were you facing?

How did those challenges affect your business and personal life?

Business wise, challenges take away from the general running and building of the business. Personal life after a work day full of headaches, would turn me into a grumpy dad and husband. When you give everything of yourself at work, there is not much left to spread around when you get home. 

What helped?

What strategies, frameworks, or exercises were beneficial?

Putting in boundaries around various processes as they arise. This would include business as well as personal boundaries. Understanding my personality type and my strengths and weaknesses has been huge and we still take this into account when tackling present day issues that we face together. Matt helps in a way that you don’t feel as though you’re doing it on your own.

Were there any other insights developed which have been helpful?

With planning and discussions with Matt, a role was created for a long standing employee who was keen to step up. This was instrumental in allowing me a greater freedom within my business to develop the business and set goals for future growth. Another positive was the added job satisfaction for our employee.

How have you benefited?

Through working with Matt our business was able to grow in its strength areas. This eventually lead to our business sale - a process that I am still in the midst of. During the handover process Matt continues to support me to achieve my end goal of completing the cycle of the business. Infancy, steady growth, excellent customers, happy employees and the successful handover to another company. Such is the support I receive from Matt, I negotiated a period of 2 years, seeing Matt once a month, into the sale contract!
